1. Re-Evaluate Your Goals

Take out a piece of paper and write down where you want your business or blog to be a year from now.

Think about the following when doing so:

Number specific items such as:

  • Earnings
  • Traffic
  • Sales
  • Subscribers/followers

Non-number specific items such as:

  • Authority
  • Design
  • Happiness
  • Lifestyle

Every once in a while, we get so caught up in doing things that we forget why we're doing them. You will have more energy to get things done if you think about your goals again. You might even find that you need to change how you do things to get where you want to go.

2. Visit Your Homepage for the "First Time"

I always say it, but I'll say it again: first impressions are VERY important, especially when you're online. A new guest will leave in less than ten seconds if you don't make them want to stay.

What should we do? Role play a bit...

Act like you're a new visitor to your site. On your home page, go through the following questions in your head:

  1. What do I notice first?
  2. Can I understand exactly what the site is about without scrolling or clicking anything?
  3. Have I seen other sites like this before?
  4. How easy is the website to navigate?
  5. What seems to be missing?

If you quickly answer those five questions, it will be clear what needs to be done to make your website better. It might be as easy as making some letters bigger or getting rid of some annoying ads or pop-ups.

Do any of these changes right now if you think they will take less than five minutes. Write something down or put it on a to-do list if it will take you more than five minutes. That way, you can do it later.

3. Check and Correct Crawl Errors

That's right, Google Search Console can help you find and fix any mistakes on your site right away.

Step 1: Go to Google Search Console.

Step 2: Verify your website address and make a Google Account if you haven't already. If you already have Gmail, you're good to go. You'll need to "add new site" and use either a meta or html page on your server to check your site. Google will show you how to do it.

Step 3: Click on your confirmed website once everything is set up. A part of the page on the right is called "Crawl Errors." Google bots that visit your website keep track of any mistakes they come across. These mistakes could be things like broken links or links that people should be able to access but don't. It's possible to click on each mistake to see exactly where it's happening and fix it right away.

4. Grade Your Website

Having a site like Website Grader grade your site is an even better way to make sure it is healthy. You don't even have to enter your email address, and it's free. It reads your website and tells you what you can do right away to make it better. The report is long but easy to understand.

Like, if your meta data or website details are too long, it will let you know (and tell you how much). It checks your social media, RSS feed, picture tags, and a lot of other things on your site that you should have optimized.

It's free to try!

5. Ask Someone A Question

That doesn't matter what level you are with your blog or online business. You will always have questions that you want answered. Sometimes I need help with something and I'm not afraid to ask someone with more knowledge than me. Most of the time, they will get back to me.

You can do it now and it's easy. Do not be shy. What's the worst thing that could really happen? You're not going to hear back?

It's not really that bad. It will happen, but you can keep going.

6. Shoot a Video

That's correct. Right now, turn on the camera that's hooked up to your computer and record a movie of yourself.

What are you planning to say?

Anything that has to do with your blog.

Take five minutes to film a movie that hasn't been edited, then upload it to YouTube. Make sure that the title and tags have relevant keywords after you've posted the video. Also, make sure that the first line of the video description has your full URL. Feel free to send it to all of your social media friends.

Tim Ferriss likes to give us tasks in The Four Hour Workweek that get us out of our comfort zones. At some point, this has to happen for real growth and big steps to be taken.

One of his exercises is to lie down on the ground and look straight up into the air in a public place. It might sound weird, but if you can do that, think about what you can do when you're talking about something you really care about in front of a crowd.

Taking a movie like this on a whim will help you get out of your comfort zone and improve your public speaking skills.

7. Spend 5 Minutes to Thank 5 of Your Customers, Subscribers, or Readers

Anyone can feel better when you go out of your way to say thank you for no reason. Even more than that, those five people will remember who you are. Who knows, one of them might even come back and thank you in some way later on just for being nice.

It's the little things that people do for each other that make relationships truly unique, just like in happy, successful relationships.

8. Test Something

You should test something on your blog or website all the time.

All the time.

Test something important on your page in two different ways with A/B split testing and analyze the results. Many website and online business marketing tools have A/B split testing tools to allow you to test variations of your content.

Even if you're not selling anything, you can still check the rates of email opt-ins, followers, and even clicks on different links on your site.

9. Turn off the Distractions

There are lots of things that try to stop us from moving forward and getting things done, especially for those of us who blog and work from home.

The first step is to figure out what those obstacles are. Second, try to turn them off on purpose. Only turn them back on when you've reached a goal or finished something you set out to do.

I need to turn off both my email and Twitter notifications so I don't get a word while I'm doing something else. So I don't click on certain apps, I also put my phone on silent and work in full screen sometimes.

A lot of the time, I think about what helps me move forward and what doesn't. Things that I think are helping me don't always work out that way. I use the 80/20 rule to figure out what the twenty percent of my business that makes a difference is. Then I work on that.

"You have to starve the horses and feed the stallions," a wise Internet marketer once said.

10. Follow up With Your Audience

Asking your customers or fans what they would like to see better is always a good idea, whether you have an online store selling something or a blog.

They really will tell you if you ask.

You should be keeping track of your past customers' email addresses, right? You should also send an email to your email list, right? You should even write a blog post asking them for ideas on how to improve their experience. Don't forget that it's not about you, but about what your audience does.

In the end, this is how I got the website style I love for this blog. I did a redesign before and asked people what they thought. You gave me great feedback, which is all that counts.

This will help you figure out how to make your blog or business better, and it will also show that you care about them by making you ask.

That's all there is to it. There are ten things you can do now to help your blog or online business. Leave a message or retweet this post on Twitter if you'd like to help me out.

Many thanks for your help, and best wishes to you!
